Last week the Board of Directors of the Bankview Community Association had the opportunity to meet with Cam and Chris, two Bankview residents and graphic artists, who were recently awarded an “I Love My Neighbourhood” grant. These grants were designed to provide any Bankview resident with an opportunity to make a difference in our community. These “I Love My Neighbourhood” grants are co-ordinated by a committee of Bankview volunteers in conjunction with the City of Calgary.
In their grant application, Cam and Chris proposed to paint a community-focused mural on the the south-east corner of the Bankview Hall (location pictured below).
Over the next few weeks, Cam and Chris will be finalizing their design (see the rough sketch submitted in their application below). The mural has been created in what is called flat vector illustration. It will be primarily of geometric shapes, and of a limited colour palette. Take a moment and see if you can identify all the local flavour that Cam and Chris have included. We especially love the inclusion of the T-Rex from the mural on 26th Ave (look carefully).
The final mural will be painted on the Bankview Hall in two stages: (1) there will be an evening event where community members will be invited to come and see Cam and Chris outlining of the mural; and (2) a two-day painting affair where community members will be able to complete the mural as if it were a large paint-by-number project. To ensure the consistency, quality, and aesthetic of the mural, participants must be 12 years of age and up.
Because the entire exterior of the Hall is currently being painted this summer, we cannot yet announce a date for either of the above events. That said, we hope to have it completed by mid-August. So please keep watch, and we hope you can join us in this exciting initiative.
